A last is the form that a boot is built on. It allows leather to be stretched around it and create the correct size, width, and toe shape. Once the last is built to the measurements of your feet, it can be used to create future boots and ensure the fit is always perfect.
Leather insoles are the backbone of quality footwear construction. Unlike man made board, which is standard in mass produced footwear, a leather insole will last longer, forms to the foot over time, and is breathable so it doesn't lock in bad odors.
Fancy stitching not only adds structure to boot tops, but also adds color and personality. Inlay is the process of cutting images out of leather and laying different colored or textured leather below to create the iconic cowboy boot look, and can tell your unique story in leather.
The welt is a narrow strip of leather that holds the boot together. Hand stitching passes through the welt, then the boot upper, to the leather insole. This construction does not involve glue, making it incredibly sturdy. It also allows the boots to be repaired and resoled for life.
Wood pegs have been used for centuries to make footwear. In cowboy boots, wood pegs are used to secure the waist section and creates a strong bond by expanding and contracting at the same rate as leather, and will not rust out like standard steel nails.
Leather is stacked layer by layer to the correct height, and carefully sanded to shape. Heel shape can add a surprising amount of personality to your boots, so don't overlook this aspect of the design!
